Flea and Tick Prevention

flea and tick prevention at laguna hills veterinarian trinity pet hospital

Here in Laguna Hills, both humans and animals are at risk for exposure to fleas and ticks, and unlike in other climates, Orange County has no "off-season" for these pesky critters. It's the reason why Dr. Kerolos and his team at Trinity Pet Hospital urges all pet owners to be vigilant with flea and tick prevention measures for their pets at all times, no matter what time of year.

The Importance of Flea And Tick Prevention--And How Your Laguna Hills Veterinarian Can Help

Fleas and ticks can cause various health problems in cats, dogs, and other animals. If left untreated, some of these diseases can become severe or even life-threatening. At Trinity Pet Hospital, our Laguna Hills veterinarian team treats (and, whenever possible, prevents) many of these common flea- and tick-borne illnesses:

  • Flea-allergy dermatitis—Many pets are allergic to flea saliva. Animals cannot help but scratch, lick and bite these spots incessantly, which can lead to hair loss as well as red, oozing “hot spots” that can become infected.

  • Tapeworms—Fleas also transmit these intestinal parasites that may cause low appetite, weight loss, fatigue, dull coat, an itchy behind, and diarrhea or vomiting. The pet’s stool may contain visible, whitish, molted tapeworm segments.

  • Lyme disease—This bacterial disease transmitted by ticks can cause fever, lethargy and sudden lameness in pets.

  • Rocky Mountain spotted fever—Another tick-transmitted disease that can cause joint and muscle pain along with fever; it usually appears 3 days after a tick bite.

  • Bartonella—Transmitted via fleas or ticks, it can affect cats, dogs and humans (in the form of “cat scratch fever”). Symptoms may include cough, sneezing, oral ulcers, eye problems, fever, swollen lymph nodes, vomiting or diarrhea.

Laguna Hills veterinarian Dr. Kerolos takes the time necessary to implement an appropriate  prevention plan for your animal and educate you on ways to keep your pet healthy. We provide high quality medications that are easy to use, effective, and affordable.

Flea and Tick Prevention Tips From Your Laguna Hills Veterinarian

Remember: it's always less painful and expensive to prevent flea and tick bites than to treat the diseases they cause! Dr. Kerolos and his team recommend the following prevention tips:

  1. Always keep your pets on a regular dose of flea and tick preventative medication. If your pet gains or loses weight, check with Dr. Kerolos about the correct dosage.

  2. Keep your yard neatly trimmed and free of flea, tick, and rodent habitat.

  3. Consider planting flea and tick repelling plants like lavender, rosemary, mint, lemongrass, citronella, sage, and garlic in your yard.

  4. Tick-check yourself and your pets after any outdoor activity; pay special attention to the groin, belly, "armpits", and any other particularly folded or furry spots.
