Laguna Hills Veterinarian Explains the Signs & Treatment Options for Pet Skin AllergiesTrinity Pet Hospital, Laguna Hills veterinarian explains potential symptoms of skin allergies in pets, how to diagnosing & treat skin allergies

At Trinity Pet Hospital, our Laguna Hills veterinarian and team strives to provide each pet with the highest standard of veterinary care, treating all pets that come through our doors like members of our own family. One of the more common things we see as part of our pet dermatology services is that of skin allergies in pets, which can be problematic if left untreated.

Signs of Skin Allergies in Pets

There are many potential symptoms of skin allergies in pets, and no two pets will react to skin allergies in exactly the same way. One of the most common signs of a skin allergy is that of excessive grooming, scratching, or biting. In some cases, the over-grooming may become so severe that hair loss occurs and the skin underneath becomes exposed. If the pet continues to scratch, lick, or bite at the area, this could lead to sores that run the risk of becoming infected, which is why seeing a veterinarian to diagnose and treat skin allergies in pets is so important.

Diagnosing and Treating Skin Allergies

Because skin allergies often share similar symptoms as dermatological diseases, it's important for our veterinary team to carefully rule out other potential problems before confirming a skin allergy. Often times, this can be done by assessing your pet's symptoms in addition to intermittently controlling different aspects of your pet's environment to narrow down the specific source of the allergic reaction.

In cases where the irritant can be removed from the pet's environment (such as a certain food formula), this is the ideal treatment. However, if your pet is allergic to something that cannot be removed from the environment, other treatments like antihistamine medication or allergy shots may be recommended as treatment.
