Laguna Hills Veterinarian Explains Pet Vaccines

Pet Vaccinations From Your Laguna Hills Veterinarian

At Trinity Pet Hospital, we believe that preventative care is the best type of veterinary care, and the key to preventative care is pet vaccinations. Vaccines are medicine that contains antigens, versions of a disease that don't cause symptoms in your pet. These antigens cause your dog's or cat's body to become immune to the disease it's designed to fight. In short, vaccinations cause your pet's own body to become healthier and more able to fight off serious diseases.

Laguna Hills Veterinarian Talks About Vaccinations

Puppies and kittens are born with a natural immunity that lasts a few weeks, and they get a longer boost from their mother's milk. By the time your pet is weaned, though, the immunity will begin to wear off. That's why our Laguna Hills veterinarian recommends that you bring in your new pet at six to eight weeks of age. We'll examine your puppy or kitten, and give it its first round of vaccinations. During the first year of your pet's life, it will need three more rounds of vaccines to create a full adult immunity. After one year of age, your pet will only need a booster vaccination once each year to stay healthy and disease-free.

There are two types of vaccines for both dogs and cats: core and non-core. Core vaccines are those that every pet gets, such as rabies and distemper vaccinations. These are for the most serious diseases, with some of them even being required by law in some jurisdictions. Non-core vaccines, on the other hand, are only needed depending on your pet's environment or lifestyle. For example, if your dog spends a lot of time in wooded areas, we'll recommend a vaccine against Lyme disease. Cats that are boarded in kennels should always be inoculated against bordetella. Our veterinarian will advise you on which vaccines are right for your dog or cat.
