Preventive Veterinary Care for Your Outdoor Cats

Preventive Veterinary Care for Your Outdoor Cats

veterinary care for outdoor cats.jpgYour outdoor cat is vulnerable to a host of diseases, accidents and potentially deadly run-ins with rival cats in your neighborhood. You most likely do your best to provide fresh water and food, and a safe, covered place for your cat to sleep while he or she is at home. However, once your cat leaves your property, he or she is subject to any number of occurrences that could leave him or her open to a life-threatening infection, illness or injury.

You cannot always physically be there to protect your beloved feline friend. You can, however, utilize the power of preventive veterinary care to maximize your cat's chances of surviving an attack, animal accident or sickness.

Vaccinations are your first line of defense to shield your outdoor cat from picking up illnesses from the other neighborhood cats. In fact, the most common communicable feline illnesses – feline leukemia, upper respiratory infection, and distemper – can easily be thwarted with yearly vaccinations. You should also have your outdoor cat vaccinated for rabies because he or she might come in contact with a rabies-carrying wild animal, such as a raccoon, a bat or a skunk.

Your second line of veterinary preventive care for your outdoor cat is parasite-deterring products and/or treatments. These include flea and tick, heartworm, round worm and hook worm preventatives. If your cat is diagnosed with any of these conditions during his or her veterinary checkup, you should immediately begin treatments.

Focusing on the Safety of Your Cat in the Great Outdoors

It is true that most outside cats are susceptible to the same unfavorable external factors. Nevertheless, your cat has his or her own individual needs that our Orange County veterinarian can uncover to ensure your outdoor cat's optimal survival rate.

Is there a special circumstance that might be preventing your cat from living a full, happy life in the great outdoors?
