Toothbrushes Aren't Just for People: Animal Dentistry Tips

animal dentistry tips.jpegNext time you wake up with morning breath and head over to brush your teeth, remember your pet, too. Dogs and cats have some of the same oral hygiene problems that people do, with bacteria that builds up, causes gums to become inflamed, and leads to bad breath. Although you can make an appointment with our Orange County vet clinic to get your pet's teeth professionally cleaned, you should take regular steps to care for your pet's teeth.

Pet Dental Tips for Healthy Oral Hygiene

1. Stock Up on Supplies: Purchase pet dental supplies from your veterinarian or a pet supply store. You'll need pet toothpaste and a pet toothbrush, or gauze to use when brushing a cat's teeth. You can also purchase dental rinses and dental chews, which our vet clinic recommends to help promote dental health in between brushing.

2. Brush Teeth Regularly: Our veterinary practice recommends brushing your pet's teeth every day. The sensation might be difficult for your pet to handle at first, but he or she will quickly get used to it as you make it part of the daily routine. Choose a time when your pet is relaxed and get it acclimated to the practice by letting it just lick some of the pet toothpaste off your finger at first, or rubbing your pet's teeth with your finger. After your pet is used to that, you can start gently brushing the pet's teeth with a toothbrush, pulling back its gums as needed.

3. Get Dental Checkups: You can make appointments for animal dentistry services at most veterinary offices, including ours. We can give your pet's teeth a professional cleaning, take x-rays, and treat problem areas. Some pets even need to have their teeth pulled if they suffer from significant tooth decay or gum problems. An annual cleaning is a must-have, but you can schedule supplemental appointments if you notice a problem.

Have you tried brushing your pet's teeth before? If so, what technique tips do you have?
