The discomfort from skin diseases can be hard for your animal to handle. If you notice signs of skin troubles, you should bring your pet to our animal clinic for an examination. Skin diseases not only affect the external skin and coat of your animal, but some diseases can cause problems internally. Our Orange County veterinarian will assist you at our vet clinic in determining your pet's skin problem and design an effective treatment plan for healing. Some common skin diseases in pets are Acute Moist Dermatitis or hot spots, Ectoparasites, and autoimmune skin diseases.

Commonly Seen Skin Diseases in Pets

Acute Moist Dermatitis or hot spots are typically the result of self-trauma. Your pet may have scratched itself or punctured their skin while playing. The Acute Moist Dermatitis occurs when your pet tries to relieve itself of the itch and pain. This skin disease can be treated by thoroughly cleaning their skin, applying topical and systemic antibiotics and using anti-inflammatory agents.

Ectoparasites or external parasites include fleas, ticks and mites. These parasites break the skin barrier and allow bacteria into the skin causing infections. Parasites can lead to allergic conditions and are diagnosed with microscopic examination of skin scrapings. Treatments for Ectoparasites depend on the type of parasite. They can include antiparasitic drugs or shampoos and rinses.

Autoimmune Skin Diseases like pemphigus are common in pets such as dogs. One type of this skin disease appears on the outer layers of the skin. It is diagnosed with a surgical biopsy and treatments can include combinations of dietary supplements, immune modulation drugs and steroids.

Our Orange County veterinarian provides many treatments in our pet hospital including vaccinations, spay and neuter services, urgent and emergency care, pet surgery and medical treatments for skin diseases and other problems.
